Vacancies: Managing Medical Director and Head of IT

The new legal entity representing the joint working of Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow and Royal College of Physicians of London is seeking to fill the vacancies of the managing medical director and head of IT which report into the chief operating officer.

This entity will co-create and deliver:

  • the MRCP(UK) Diploma Examinations including the PACES examination, and Specialty Certificate Examinations (SCE’S)
  • the Joint Royal College of Physicians Training Board (JRCPTB) which is responsible for managing the Colleges’ role in the regulation of specialist training in the UK
  • the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Policy and Diary for Physicians

Managing Medical Director

The Managing Medical Director (MMD) is responsible for the clinical input to the strategic direction and delivery of the objectives agreed by Federation Board, as well as the leadership of the clinical working staff within the Federation through collaborative working with the Board of Federation and the Chief Operating Officer (COO).

Key Responsibilities

  • works collaboratively with the COO to generate the strategic leadership required to deliver a successful service;
  • chairs academic and clinical boards/committees
  • development of clinical policy and monitor research activity of Federation;
  • develops and presents new opportunities appropriate to the agreed strategic direction of the company jointly with the COO;
  • provides input into integrated business planning and budgeting processes;

Key skills and experience

  • A Fellow of one of the 3 Colleges of Physicians
  • Have a significant understanding of training, assessment and continuing professional development.
  • Proven experience of management or leadership responsibility in a clinical environment.
  • An understanding of the regulatory framework for medicine in the UK.
  • Creative approach to problem solving and ability to understand, analyse and interpret complex information.

Head of IT

The Head of IT role comprises mainly of defining, sourcing and delivering new systems to replace the current legacy APC IT systems with a new integrated web-enabled IT platform.

Key responsibilities

  • Leading in the development of an IT systems and support strategy for the APC operations, ensuring strategic alignment between the IT strategy and business needs, ensuring interfaces with external payment platforms and accounting software Great Plains.
  • To migrate away from bespoke legacy systems and deliver a successful systems change programme and ongoing projects.
  • To lead the tender to procure third party software developers for components or the whole of the project.
  • To define data-sharing arrangements between APC and the 3 Colleges, ensuring adherence to GDPR and DPA legislation
  • To manage 3rd party delivery partners and outsourced IT service providers to ensure the successful delivery of the IT systems.

Key skills and experience

  • Knowledge of network infrastructures, application architectures, web technologies and security infrastructures and architectures
  • Proven capability to design and deliver effective IT strategy in support of business objectives
  • Experience of leading IT transformation
  • Good understanding of legislation compliance and data security practices
  • Proven track record of developing and maintaining positive working relationships with colleagues and stakeholders both internal and external
