During the January to March 2020 PACES assessment period, we will once again be running the PACES Fast Track scheme. This offers trainees applying for ST3 posts an additional attempt at the PACES examination.  This is an initiative MRCP(UK) introduced to aid trainees’ career progression and support run-through training.

The PACES Fast Track 2020 scheme is only available to candidates applying for an ST3 post in Spring 2020. It will allow a number of candidates who are unsuccessful in their initial PACES attempt to have a further attempt within the same assessment period.

Fast Track applications will only be accepted from candidates who meet the following criteria:

  1. Candidates who are currently working in a CT2 post in the UK.
  2. Candidates not in a CT2 post who can provide confirmation (for example from their Educational Supervisor) that they are actively planning and in a position to apply for an ST3 training post in the UK in Spring 2020.

ALL candidates must have passed or applied for the MRCP(UK) Part 2 Written Examination at the time of sitting the first attempt of PACES in the January to March assessment period.

In the event that the number of applications for Fast Track exceeds the number of places available, candidates will be prioritised as follows:

  1. Candidates in category A above (working in a CT2 post in the UK).
  2. Candidates in category B above, who have had no more than two previous attempts at PACES (including their first attempt in the January to March PACES assessment period).*
  3. Other candidates in category B who have had more than two previous attempts at PACES (including their first attempt in the January to March PACES assessment period).*   **

*This is based on evidence that candidates are more likely to pass their Fast Track attempt if they have had only one or two previous PACES attempts.

**Limit on attempts regulations apply.

Please note that candidates applying for Fast Track must also apply for PACES in the January to March assessment period online in the normal way. Click here to apply.

Fast Track applications must be made online via the application page on the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh’s website. The Edinburgh College will be processing the Fast Track applications on behalf of all three Colleges. Click here to apply

The link will go live at 10am on Monday 11 November and close at 10am on Monday 18 November.

Please note that the Fast Track application period is shorter than the main PACES application period.

Late applications will not be accepted.

Applications will only be accepted from eligible candidates. Fast Track applications will be considered incomplete until a separate PACES application has been made and any supporting information (for candidates in category B) has been received.

Candidates are strongly recommended to apply at the start of the application period as there will be limited places and it is possible that not all applicants will be accommodated.

Distribution of places

All Fast Track applicants will be notified by email no later than mid-December 2019 as to whether they have been awarded a provisional place, have been placed on a waiting list or have been unsuccessful. Final allocation of Fast Track places (i.e. centre and date) will be made once places are confirmed in 2020.
